Monster truck cake with a cool spiral Oreo dirt track!
This monster truck cake is possibly the coolest cake I’ve ever made. I feel a little more awesome just knowing I made it and it turned out so amazing. But I gotta say, it almost didn’t happen. I’ve never in all my cake years (18 years – wow! I’m old), made a spiral road/ staircase cake. Add to that filming the sucker as I tried to figure it out, and it could have been a recipe for disaster. Somehow it all feel into place, and I seriously couldn’t wipe the grin from my face all afternoon. Is there anything better than challenging yourself with a crazy cake design, and then managing to pull it off?
I used my sturdy vanilla cupcake recipe for this cake, and did three batches in two 6″ and two 9″ pans. It’s really important that the have a strong cake that’s been chilling in the fridge to make this entire cake carving process easier. I still wanted some yumminess, so I filled and crumb coated the cake with a thick layer of chocolate buttercream. Vanilla and chocolate just go so well together, so I promise you I’ll do a recipe combining those two very soon.
I had so much fun making this cake. I wanted the cake to really pop, so I went for orange and blue buttercream with an Oreo chocolate ‘dirt’ track. You can never have too much chocolate! I’ve marked out in the materials list how much frosting I went through in all the colours, as well as which shades, because I know how hard it is to try and gauge how much frosting to make.
