A fun and simple lilac buttercream flower cake that couldn’t be easier to make!
When I’m in the mood to whip up a cake at the last minute, there’s every chance it’s going to be a buttercream piping kind of cake. If you’re looking for a cake with texture, flowers, fun colours, and something not too tricky, this is absolutely the cake for you! I can’t believe I didn’t think of this earlier. All you need is some run of the mill piping tips, and some delicious sweet buttercream, and you can create this stunning lilac buttercream flower cake yourself.
I made this cake with an easy tip to get your hands on, a 2D Wilton tip. I used three of these tips, which I know not everyone has a bunch of the same tip lying around, so if you just have the one, randomly place flowers of each colour around the cake, leaving room for the next colour and so on. Now you can absolutely stop at that, and not add the little white dots of frosting, but let me tell you, once I added them it was like the cake came alive, and suddenly all those dollops of frosting really did look like flowers.
This gorgeous cake reminds me so much of our lilac tree we had in our front yard in Oregon. It was the only tree on our entire lot when we bought the place, and it was in the front corner of the yard. I ended up creating a little flagstone patio around it, with a step down to the rest of the yard, and it was the sweetest little spot to sit. I can remember spending so many mornings out there with my little girls watching them play in the grass, and get so excited to see all the bulbs and blossoms appearing in the Spring. Here in this house our yard is coming along nicely, however it’s enormous in comparison so it’s going to take years to get it all done. That’s okay though, since I love planting real flowers and working in the yard about as much as I love piping them out of buttercream. Flowers and gardens are a family thing with us, and I seriously feel so recharged after spending a few hours out there every week.

Lilac buttercream flower cake materials
• Two 7″ round sponge cakes
• Sweet Buttercream
– 300g (10.5oz) bright purple shade (3 parts Americolor Electric Purple and 1 part Americolor Electric Pink )
– 300g (10.5oz) light purple (equal parts Americolor Regal Purple and Americolour Electric Purple)
– 300g (10.5oz) dark purple (equal parts Americolor Regal Purple and Americolour Electric Purple)
– 500g (1lb 1oz) plain for filling and #2 tip
