Oreo cake showdown – for when you can’t decide between chocolate and vanilla!
I really can’t explain to you how monumentally huge the fight is here at home over whether Oreo buttercream goes with chocolate cake or vanilla. And I get it, the cookies have both flavours happening, and some people are just always going to want more chocolate, but seriously, I’m just team vanilla on this Oreo cake fight.
A lot of people see vanilla cake as “plain cake”. But if you spend a little (okay a lot) extra on the high quality vanilla beans or extracts, you are going to fall in love with vanilla cakes I promise you. Still, I was getting a little outnumbered by the chocolate fans around here, so I made this enormous, and it really is enormous, showdown cake. Time to put it to the test, literally stack them up and see who takes this thing out!
The chocolate cake is fluffier than the vanilla in this Oreo cake recipe, and though it’s dark in colour, it’s not overpowering in flavour. I think that’s what makes these two recipes go so well together. While I do absolutely love a rich, dense mud cake, I think when you are pairing it with a vanilla cake, and a flavour like Oreo, you will drown out all of that if the chocolate cake is too intense. We also really loved how the cakes weren’t exactly the same density, so that the vanilla cake added a nice weight to the cake, but the chocolate stopped you from feeling like you were going to go into a food coma!

So after consuming WAY too large of a slice, the verdict is not unanimous, but I did manage to convert one more person to the vanilla side. We did however all agree that adding both flavours was amazing, and this is definitely the best way to serve a cookies and cream style buttercream. So I guess I’ll be making only giant Oreo cakes from now on:) We wrapped up two full quarters of this cake and gave it to two other families, you know, just to share the love, and really because if we kept it here we would not be able to show any restraint, and we probably would have polished off the whole thing!
Oh, and one more quick note, how incredibly stunning are these Sprinkles! Lauren, a former wedding cake bride of ours, and ex-decorating student started her very own sprinkle business Sprinkle Boutique, and I’m seriously in love. I adore her colour palettes and honestly, they are just so fun and delicious. I’m so excited to see her do well in the cake world, and with everyone on the sprinkle cake train right now, I know she’ll do great.
