I’m Asma, and I started baking from home in 2011 and set up Sugared Saffron in the beginning of 2012. I decided to specialise in wedding cakes because that’s where my heart is and I’ve been going ever since. Last year we moved into our own dedicated commercial studio and have been enjoying the new space and the increased volume of orders.

WHAT DID YOU MAKE FOR YOUR FIRST CAKE?
My first cake was a cake for a friend of a friend. It was a two tier cake with no dowels, covered in buttercream with piped swirls and chocolate roses.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE AS A TEENAGER?
I wanted to be a doctor when I was a teenager, then a neuroscientist and so naturally I became a wedding cake designer.

WHO IS YOUR GREATEST SUPPORTER?
My greatest supported is definitely my husband, I couldn’t do this without him.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO MAKE THE AVERAGE CAKE?
I’ve never timed it so I’d be completely wrong if I answered this.
IF YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My best piece of advice is take it slow. Like really slow. Don’t rush to try lots of different techniques and set up social media accounts, spend at least a year just working on your craft without the added stress of customers and running a business.
WHO EATS YOUR CAKE SCRAPS?
I’ve got lots of siblings so they used to eat my scraps but now I’m in a commercial unit the other people who work in the building finish the scraps off.
HOW LONG COULD YOU LAST WITHOUT CHOCOLATE?
I could last forever without chocolate, just don’t ask me to give up cheese.
WHAT’S THE ONE STYLE OF CAKE YOU ARE MOST EXCITED TO TRY?
I love anything modern with colours!
WHO IS THE ONE DECORATOR, YOU WOULD JUST LOVE TO SPEND THE DAY WITH, JUST TO WATCH THEM WORK?
I think it would probably be Ron Ben Israel, I think he’s just perfection.
