It’s all in the name, À la Roch, everything is prepared and made by me, Rochelle. Located in Newcastle I am a cake decorator and graphic designer with my own range of custom acrylic cake toppers. I have created a range of unique smash cakes including giant cupcakes and 6″ rounds.
WHAT DID YOU MAKE FOR YOUR FIRST CAKE?
I have always loved baking and creating, but the cake that started my “caking career” was my husband’s 30th. Everyone at the party wanted me to make their birthday cake, and so it began.
DID YOU KNOW ANY CAKE DECORATORS BEFORE YOU STARTED?
I didn’t know any cake decorators before I started. I did a course at the local college and met a small group of lovely ladies, and through Facebook we created a local group of decorators who have been so supportive. They are all talented in their own way and it’s lovely to catch up and talk cake over a great meal and of course dessert. Now most of my close friends are decorators.
WHO IS YOUR GREATEST SUPPORTER?
My greatest supporter is my family. My kids always gasp, and say how amazing the cakes are and my husband for dealing with minimal fridge and pantry space due to my cake stuff.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO MAKE THE AVERAGE CAKE?
Average smash cake takes around an hour to decorate.
IF YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Advice would be, only take on the cakes you want to do, because you will regret it the morning before at 3am when your still working on it!
WHAT’S THE ONE STYLE OF CAKE YOU ARE MOST EXCITED TO TRY?
The style of cake I am most excited by is ruffles, fondant or frosting. I love them!
WHO IS THE ONE DECORATOR, YOU WOULD JUST LOVE TO SPEND THE DAY WITH, JUST TO WATCH THEM WORK?
The one caker I would love to spend the day with is Thu from Cakes 2 Cupcakes. If you have seen one of her cakes, you will know why. Every cake is on point and her photography just highlights every detail.
ANY ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS?
Biggest advice to someone starting out, don’t be afraid, give it a go. Practice, practice, practice and be true to yourself to find your own style.
